Fun, Fun and More Fun!

Hello Holy Cross Friends and Family:

We are so excited for the FIRST EVER Holy Cross BBQ Competition!  By now you have surely seen flyers for this event in the school's weekly newsletter, and the church bulletin.  Mark your calendars for Saturday, April 22, and start the countdown---you WILL NOT be disappointed!  What you can expect at this family friendly event:
  • Fun, fun, and MORE FUN!!!
  • An exciting competition (CASH PRIZES and bragging rights)
  • Surprise hometown celebrity judge-Great American Barbecue GRAND CHAMPION, KCBS judge, and local restaurant owner
  • Delicious concessions (pulled pork and ribs) to be sold
  • Beer brewing session and home brew sampling brought to you by Black Lightening Running Club (they don't run, but they sure know how to create a delicious brew)--all beer is complimentary at this event
  • Debut of our Holy Cross Spirit Store, bumper stickers and cups for sale, and t-shirts for order, all featuring our brand new heart HC design!
  • 50/50 Raffle and prize giveaway (You could literally win half of a pig---just ask Kim Pham, our pig prize winner from B&B)
  • To celebrate Earth Day, Mrs. G (fourth grade teacher) has invited all students and children to assist her in a community art project.  The children (and adults) will get to take part in creating a mural from recycled materials
  • Photo op with a REAL old fashioned fire engine---the kids won't want to miss that!
If all the above excitement isn't enough to reel you in, how about fundraising for our school and another great cause. The proceeds will help fund our newly implemented language learning curriculum.  In addition, 30% of total proceeds will go to Operation Breakthrough, a more than worthy cause.  Operation Breakthrough exists to provide safe, loving, and educational environments for young children living in poverty here in the KCMO area.  
Now it's up to all of you!  So, tell all your friends and family.  Encourage anyone interested in competing to sign-up!  The early bird special ends this Friday, 3/31. You may register and pay online via PayPal, just check out our Facebook events page here or download registration form here print, fill out, and return to the school office with payment.

Parish Festival

The Parish Festival is celebrated in September on the Sunday before or after the Feast of the Triumph of the Cross. The day begins with the Mass and continues with a festival that may feature activities such as crafts, ethnic foods, bingo, carnival games, sports, and dancing. Hundreds of volunteers are needed to help run booths and set up the festival.

Sunshine Club

Open to parishioners age 55 and over, Sunshine Club meets the first Sunday every month for breakfast and a business meeting. Monthly social activities include Royals games, picnics, potlucks, outdoor breakfasts, dinner theaters, races, boat rides, and holiday celebrations. The Sunshine Club provides support to its members during times of illness through the telephone and prayer committee. An Honor Guard for members’ funerals is provided if approved by the family.

Knights of Columbus

Be a part of a Catholic, Family, Fraternal and Service Organization that offers a variety of programs and activities for the entire family. The Knights provide service to the Catholic Church, our communities, families, and youth.

Time Commitment Variable. Members are asked to attend a one-hour meeting once a month. Participation in other activities is optional.

Quilters & Crafters

This group meets once a week on Tuesday, 9:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. in the church hall. They do crafts and handiwork to raise funds for the parish and to make donations to charity.

Boy Scouts

Meetings are held on Monday evenings. A camp-out is held one weekend a month, and a week-long camp takes place during the summer.

Couples Bridge

The Holy Cross couples bridge group meets monthly, usually the second Saturday. Two tables play at different members’ homes each month, September through April. During the evening, members rotate partners. The last session in May is a dinner and awards night.

Marriage Encounter

Marriage Encounter emphasizes improving communication between husband and wife, away from the distractions of everyday life, in a loving, private atmosphere. Marriage Encounter is for good marriages and for any couple desiring to better their marriage.

Married couples are needed to help provide Marriage Preparation for couples seeking the Sacrament of Matrimony in our parish and region.

Welcoming Committee

When an individual or family joins Holy Cross, we want them to know how glad we are that they are here. The Welcoming Committee makes sure that our new parishioners receive a personal phone call of welcome, answering any questions they may have about Holy Cross. Twice a year the Committee also hosts a reception for new parishioners and parish leaders.

Time Commitment Hosting the reception takes 4-6 hours. Calling new parishioners may take up to one hour each month.

Women of Holy Cross

Women of Holy Cross (WHC) functions as a support group for the parish both spiritually and physically. Activities include funeral dinners, monthly Coffee & Donuts after three Sunday Masses, and managing the church kitchen. WHC also sponsors both spiritual and social events for all women of the parish. All women of the parish are members and can become active by joining a Circle or by calling the President of WHC to be included in a planning group or on a volunteer list. WHC is funded by donations, Circle contributions, and individual dues which are collected in parish envelopes in September.

Women of Holy Cross Circles

Any woman of the parish is welcome to join one of our six Circles of friends. New members are welcome in any stage of life. Circles are involved in planning and hosting many parish activities, such as monthly Coffee & Donuts after Mass and the annual Spaghetti Dinner. Each Circle meets monthly and has its own officers and goals and may host family gatherings, fund raisers, and special projects. Both daytime and evening Circles are available. WHC will be happy to help you find a Circle right for you.

Funeral Dinners

When requested, WHC provides food for families of deceased members of the parish. The funeral luncheon may be served at the church hall or food can be delivered to the home. Meat is provided by WHC and volunteers provide a dessert, salad, or vegetable dish. If you would like to be on the volunteer list, please contact the WHC Funeral Dinner Chairperson. Donations are accepted.
