Approximately 300 people from our parish are involved in preparing and/or serving a hot lunch to 300-400 people on the third Friday of each month at St. Mary’s Food Kitchen in Kansas City, Kansas. Losing a loved one through death can leave us feeling alone and confused. The parish’s Bereavement Ministry team offers the prayers and compassion of the entire church to parishioners during their time of mourning. Information about the grieving process, area support groups, and resources is also made available.
Besides the Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, who bring the Eucharist to the homebound, these volunteers visit members of the parish to provide them companionship. If you are homebound or have a loved one or acquaintance who is homebound, please let the church office know.
Volunteers from Holy Cross visit Catholic patients at Shawnee Mission Medical Center. Special training is required. (Call for requirements.) This is a very rewarding ministry for both the patient and the Hospital Visitor.
Volunteers from Holy Cross visit Indian Creek and Indian Meadows Nursing Centers. Sometimes Mass is celebrated and the rosary said. Volunteers host Bingo every fourth Thursday evening and assist the Centers with activities such as games, music and birthday parties. There is a great need for one-on-one visits. At Christmas, we adopt residents without families. The goal of the nursing home ministry is to show the residents that Holy Cross parishioners care.
The Respect Life Committee at Holy Cross works to educate the parish members on respect-life issues, providing information on abortion, euthanasia, capital punishment, etc.
