Lent is a wonderful time to let the Jesus of the scriptures be revealed to us. The Gospel of the first week of Lent shows us what Jesus isn’t. The transfiguration story of the second week shows us the Jesus beyond our imaginations. These are the same stories in all cycles of the readings, but this year’s cycle for the 3rd, 4th, and 5th Sundays emphasize MERCY.... Jesus will cultivate around us when we are barren, he will welcome us back with open arms when we squander our inheritance, and he will not stand with our accusers when we been caught in a transgression. It is the abundance of mercy that catches our attention. This same mercy is expected of all the baptized.
